As the 2024 U.S. presidential race heats up, Donald Trump’s tough stance on immigration and border security is gaining traction in some unexpected places—U.S. communities along the border with Mexico. While his rhetoric on immigration has long been controversial, many border residents, including Latino voters, are now expressing support for his policies. Crime and security are top priorities in these communities, and Trump’s promise to crack down on illegal immigration and secure the border resonates deeply.

For many, Trump’s hardline stance is not seen as an attack on immigrants as a whole, but rather as a necessary measure to restore law and order in regions frequently impacted by cross-border crime. Despite the presence of immigrant communities, these residents often view illegal crossings as contributing to instability, with concerns about cartel activity, human trafficking, and drugs driving their support for stricter measures.

A key factor in this shift is the sentiment among legal immigrants who “waited their turn” to go through the proper channels.
