U.S.-Mexico Cross-Border Energy Future: Building the North American Energy Powerhouse

U.S.-Mexico Energy Cooperation

The energy landscape in North America is at a critical juncture. With growing demand, particularly in renewable energy, and global competition for energy leadership, the need for cross-border cooperation has never been greater. The U.S. and Mexico have an opportunity to harness their collective energy potential, creating an interconnected system that not only stabilizes energy supplies but also positions North America as a global leader. Cooperation in this area is essential, as both countries face increasing pressure to meet environmental commitments and ensure energy security.

Renewable Energy on the Rise

One of the most promising areas of collaboration is renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power. The U.S. and Mexico are both naturally blessed with an abundance of sunlight, especially in border regions like Texas and Baja California, where major solar projects are emerging.

How Mexico's Political Transition Will Reshape U.S.-Mexico Relations

U.S.-Mexico Relations

As Mexico prepares for a new administration under President Claudia Sheinbaum, there is growing anticipation in the U.S. about how this political transition will impact bilateral relations. With key issues such as immigration, security, and trade on the line, the change in leadership presents both opportunities and challenges.

President Sheinbaum has signaled her intent to strengthen Mexico’s role in regional leadership, particularly in Latin America. However, for the U.S., the focus will be on whether Mexico continues to be a reliable partner on issues such as border security, energy cooperation, and economic integration. While the U.S. sees stability in Mexico as crucial to its own national security and economic prosperity, political shifts often bring unpredictability.

From my perspective, the biggest impact may come in how Mexico approaches security. With growing concerns over cartel-related violence and ongoing U.S. pressure for more aggressive action, Sheinbaum’s administration will need to navigate between maintaining national sovereignty and addressing the practical realities of cross-border crime. How Mexico's new government balances its domestic political agenda with these international demands will determine the next chapter of U.S.-Mexico relations.

The Border Buzz

Trump’s Appeal Among Border Residents—Crime, Security, and “Waiting Their Turn”

U.S. - Mexico Immigration Policy

As the 2024 U.S. presidential race heats up, Donald Trump’s tough stance on immigration and border security is gaining traction in some unexpected places—U.S. communities along the border with Mexico. While his rhetoric on immigration has long been controversial, many border residents, including Latino voters, are now expressing support for his policies. Crime and security are top priorities in these communities, and Trump’s promise to crack down on illegal immigration and secure the border resonates deeply.

For many, Trump’s hardline stance is not seen as an attack on immigrants as a whole, but rather as a necessary measure to restore law and order in regions frequently impacted by cross-border crime. Despite the presence of immigrant communities, these residents often view illegal crossings as contributing to instability, with concerns about cartel activity, human trafficking, and drugs driving their support for stricter measures.

A key factor in this shift is the sentiment among legal immigrants who “waited their turn” to go through the proper channels. They feel a sense of fairness is violated when others bypass the legal process, viewing those who cross illegally as “skipping the line.” This perspective aligns with Trump’s rhetoric, which emphasizes the distinction between lawful and unlawful immigration.

Interestingly, Trump’s threat of mass deportations—a cornerstone of his immigration platform—has not deterred many border residents from supporting him. One reason could be that many see undocumented migrants as merely passing through their towns and border cities, eventually settling in inland states and cities. For them, the deportation issue feels distant, even if it is alarming to other communities across the U.S.

Finally, it’s important to note that economic concerns are also influencing voter sentiment. Border communities face economic challenges that make jobs, wages, and inflation top-of-mind issues. In this context, Trump’s promises of economic revitalization and reducing competition for jobs from undocumented migrants can overshadow the more controversial aspects of his immigration platform.

Together, these dynamics highlight why some border residents—many of whom are directly impacted by the complexities of immigration—are drawn to Trump’s hardline policies, even when they appear negative. This evolving political landscape underscores the tension between national immigration policy and the lived realities of those on the border.
