Binational Immigration Reform: A Shared Responsibility for U.S.-Mexico Cooperation
Bridges Over Borders
As a migrant from Mexico and a Latino leader in the United States, I have experienced firsthand the deep interconnection between our two nations. The stories of those crossing borders reflect both hope and the human cost of a broken immigration system. The U.S. and Mexico share an unavoidable responsibility: to work together on a comprehensive immigration reform that addresses the causes and consequences of migration.
Today, millions are displaced by poverty, violence, and climate change. These forces are reshaping migration patterns and creating challenges on both sides of the border. In the U.S., migration places significant pressure on border communities and deepens political divisions. In Mexico, it has transformed the country into a critical transit point, bringing humanitarian and security challenges that demand urgent action.

Tariffs in Focus: Who Really Pays the Price?
Recent proposals to impose higher tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China have reignited debates about the effectiveness of tariffs as an economic tool. While the intention might be to protect domestic industries, the reality is far more complex—and costly.
The Consumer Impact:
Tariffs are often touted as a way to bolster American businesses, but the real losers are U.S. consumers. Higher tariffs mean higher prices on everyday goods like food, electronics, and vehicles. According to recent data, tariffs on imports from Mexico alone could raise costs on products integral to household budgets, such as fruits, vegetables, and auto parts.
Broader Economic Ripple Effects:
The consequences extend beyond price tags. Tariffs disrupt supply chains, strain relationships with key trading partners, and undermine regional cooperation agreements like the USMCA. Mexico, the U.S.’s largest trading partner, is integral to industries like agriculture and manufacturing. Higher tariffs risk weakening this crucial partnership, which could hurt the very domestic industries tariffs aim to protect.
My Perspective:
Having worked extensively on U.S.-Mexico trade, I see tariffs as a blunt tool that often backfires. Rather than punitive measures, we should invest in strengthening cross-border supply chains and creating opportunities for mutual growth. Policies that encourage collaboration, not division, are the key to long-term economic stability and competitiveness.
Did you know that in 2023, nearly 15% of U.S. fruits and vegetables came from Mexico? Tariffs on these goods could increase grocery bills by up to 20%, hitting American families hardest.
Conclusion:
The proposed tariffs might appear to be a simple solution, but their complexities and unintended consequences demand a more thoughtful approach. Trade should build bridges—not create barriers.

A Celebration of Faith and Unity
Marco and Mom (Esther) at BasĂlica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
December 12th marks DĂa de la Virgen de Guadalupe, a day of profound cultural and spiritual significance for millions of Mexicans and Mexican Americans. This celebration, honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, transcends borders, uniting communities in shared traditions and deep faith.
In cities along the U.S.-Mexico border, from Tijuana to El Paso, the festivities reflect a blend of cultural identity and binational connection. Pilgrimages, processions, and celebrations draw participants from both sides of the border, highlighting how this sacred day fosters community and preserves cultural heritage.
Did you know the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the most-visited Marian shrine in the world, attracting over 20 million pilgrims annually? Many of these pilgrims have roots on both sides of the border, symbolizing the deep ties between the U.S. and Mexico.
As we reflect on the importance of unity and collaboration in U.S.-Mexico relations, DĂa de la Virgen de Guadalupe reminds us of the shared values that bridge our nations: faith, resilience, and community.

Can China Be Defeated? The Geopolitics of Semiconductors (Part 2)
Competition and Alliances in the Race for Semiconductors
Semiconductors are the backbone of modern technology, powering everything from smartphones to defense systems. Recognizing their strategic importance, the U.S. and China are locked in a rivalry to dominate this critical sector. This competition is reshaping global alliances and could fragment the world into competing technological blocs.
The U.S. has strengthened ties with semiconductor leaders like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, which produce over 70% of the world’s chips. Initiatives like the CHIPS Act of 2022 have allocated $52 billion to boost domestic manufacturing while encouraging collaboration with allies. Taiwan’s TSMC expanding operations in Arizona highlights how these alliances are securing supply chains and countering China’s influence.
Meanwhile, China is leveraging partnerships within BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa—to diversify its supply chain and advance its technology. Russia’s expertise in advanced tech and India’s growing semiconductor ambitions provide China opportunities for collaboration. BRICS nations collectively represent over 40% of the global population and a quarter of the world’s economy, offering China significant leverage.
The semiconductor supply chain is inherently global, with no single country controlling all aspects. This complexity has intensified the race to establish influence, with both the U.S. and China lobbying for favorable trade agreements and setting international standards.
The stakes are high: semiconductors are not just economic assets but critical to national security. As alliances solidify and new partnerships emerge, the industry’s future could define global power dynamics for decades. Whether this race fosters innovation or deepens divisions depends on how nations navigate this pivotal moment.
